Day One: The French Quarter and the WWII Museum

After getting in late last night, I started today by walking to the WWII Museum to learn about the most devastating war in human history.

Once inside I was given a “dog tag” card which would help me follow the exhibits and link to online so I could link the exhibits I saw there to revisit after my trip. As I explored the museum, I learned about facets of the war I’d never thought about before.

Every exhibit was accompanied by oral stories from survivors, and small videos in addition to an impressive collection of World War II memorabilia.

I would recommend this stop to anyone visiting New Orleans, and make sure you watch the movie as well. Its well worth the extra money and gives a great explanation of the war.

After eating in the museum restaurant (very fancy), I walked along the riverfront to the French Quarter, where I walked along Canal Street and made my way into a small bookstore.

Beckham’s Bookshop was a mecca for secondhand books. Books lined the shelves on both floors all the way up to the ceiling. After browsing for a while I chose a decent voodoo lore book to accompany me home.

To top off my exploration, I walked through Michapoulos Gallery, a charming place with lovely artwork before making my way back to the hotel.

It was one heck of a first day in New Orleans, and I can’t wait for my second one. Follow me here and on socials to stay up to date on my trip.
