5 Things You Should Do While Planning Trips

Trip planning can be stressful as you try to figure out how to spend your time on trips. A lot of people make the mistake of packing their schedule with activities, leaving no time to rest or relax. Maybe you have the opposite problem and can’t find enough activities to fill your day. And sometimes, when you return home, you’re left wondering if you got the most out of your trip.

But there are five things I always do while planning for my next trip to try and make the most of it, and you should do them too.

1: Create Your Itinerary

An itinerary is an invaluable tool for any traveler and can be a lifesaver. Having all of your travel plans organized in one place can give you an excellent overview of your trip, from meal plans to flight confirmations and hotel check-in times. Itineraries should be your go-to when you check something for your trip.

You can make your itinerary by printing out your confirmations or writing it all down in a notebook, but I prefer to use an app. TripIt automatically scrolls my inbox for confirmation emails and logs them in the app. I use TripIt to plan shorter vacations and organize my confirmations and hotels. It’s handy to have all of the information right at your fingertips, just a button away.

2: Schedule Free Time

I see people make this mistake all the time. You pack your days with tons of activities and come home more tired than when you left. Remember that vacations are supposed to be relaxing, so take some time to chill in your room, by a poolside, or wherever you feel comfortable.

I like to schedule some free time either in the morning to get a little extra sleep or in the evening to turn on the TV or play a game. While activities are essential for seeing your destination and enjoying your trip, your free time will make your vacation feel like a vacation.

3:Check Your Destination

When finding popular activities and attractions, you should always check the destination’s website. Most cities have a tourist website with popular activities and attractions, including free ones. It’s a fantastic way to find activities for low-budget vacations or smaller attractions you might have overlooked.

Another place I always check is Tripadvisor. They offer plenty of ideas for paid attractions and events, such as tours, restaurants, and more. I always aim for at least two activities a day, like setting some time aside to check out the shopping and then scheduling a nice dinner afterward.

Other places you should always check out are the local museums and zoos. Sometimes they have special exhibits you won’t find in other cities.

4: Explore on Your Own

While tours are great, it might be even better to explore your destination independently. There’s nothing like that sense of discovering when exploring somewhere new.

Never underestimate the power of walking as you explore your surroundings. Always have a map handy, and stick to the more touristy areas when exploring to stay safe. I find the best attractions this way, from street shows, cozy cafes, smaller stores, street musicians.

One of the best ways to do this is to have a destination in mind and take my time getting there. For example, if I have a particular church in mind I want to visit, I take my time exploring the area between the church and me, especially if the destination is a popular place, such as a square or a shopping district.

Sometimes the attraction itself is the exploration, as you can meander through a shopping district or a park to find your adventure.

5:Schedule Activities, But Be Spontaneous

It’s okay to cancel plans if something comes up. For example, if the carnival food you ate for lunch is making you sick, it’s okay to cancel any dinner reservations you had and relax at your hotel. If you hear something else you want to do even more than an activity you already had planned, it’s okay to do that instead.

Vacations and trips are all about doing what you want to do, and nothing is set in stone (Except perhaps activities you can’t get your money back on). Plans are made to change, frequently for the better. Instead of pool time, go to a museum and relax in your hotel instead of shopping. Do whatever feels right for you.

Always remember to plan well and that plans are made to change. I hope these tips help you when planning your trip or vacation. If these tips helped you plan your trip, write a comment below, and don’t forget to subscribe for more information to get the most out of your travels.
