5 Best Indoor Water Parks in Ohio

Unfortunately, I grew out of a family tradition of visiting an indoor water park for the winter. Sometime at the end of January or February, my family would always pack up for a weekend and pretend that there wasn’t two feet of snow outside as we played in the water. Now that I’m an adult, playing in a kid-sized water park isn’t in the cards, but I’ll always have the memories.

Indoor water parks are an excellent place for families to go and forget about winter woes and beat cabin fever. And that’s why I associated the coldest, most miserable winter months with splashy watery fun. Here I list the best five indoor water parks in Ohio and don’t worry, there are some very affordable options.

1. The Great Wolf Lodge

The Great Wolf Lodge was one of my favorites growing up. It has several slides, is open from ten to eight, a hot tub for the adults, and a lazy river. The play areas are fantastic for children, and adults can watch them from the food court or adult section.

The lodge also includes shopping, a build-a-bear workshop, an arcade, and a small bowling alley. There’s tons of family fun to have with activities for children and families, from magical quests to just hanging out in the hotel room.

There are two Great Wolf Lodge locations in Ohio, one in Sandusky and one in Cincinnati. However, as much fun as these parks are, they’re not cheap. Luckily, you can sign up for their mailing list or check the deals section of their website to search for a reasonable price. Or, if you just want the water park experience, you can get a day or a half-day pass for just their water park, which is much cheaper than staying an entire night at the hotel. Just make sure you book the passes ahead of time, there’s only a limited number, and they go fast.

If it’s within your budget, I’d recommend these for families trying out this tradition for the first time, as they’re truly unforgettable.

2. Kalahari Resort

Another favorite from my childhood is Kalahari. I haven’t been back for years, but one glance is all I need. They’ve only gotten bigger and better. Kalahari is home to one of the biggest waterparks in Ohio, in addition to laser tag, underwater VR, game room, and indoor golf. With this many activities, you won’t have any problems finding things to do during your stay.

You can stay at the hotel or get a day pass for any activities. This is another pricy option, but it’s still a ball, and they offer special discounts for military members. You can check their special deals section to find something that works for you. Kalahari also offers monthly passes that will let you into their water park daily, a great option if you live nearby and can go to Kalahari regularly.

Kalahari is a genuinely incredible water park and is fun any time of the year. It has shopping and dining options, including a spa and salon for adults. It’s great for the entire family, or even for adults who’re kids at heart.

3. Castaway Bay

Castaway Bay was another childhood staple, and unfortunately, it’s currently undergoing renovations and won’t open until spring 2022. But once they open back up, it’ll be one of the top indoor waterparks in Ohio, and it’s never too early to think about next year.

With plenty of guest rooms and activities for all ages, from fancy restaurants to family buffets, there’s a little something for everybody at Castaway Bay. If you want to visit during the summer, you can bundle with Cedar Point to get access to both the water and amusement park, making a fantastic vacation filled with thrills, chills, and spills. This is another pricier option. However, you can get good deals by booking early or last minute.

The hotel has yet to reveal the full extent of its new activities and attractions, so check their website periodically for updates on what they have. That being said, they’ve announced a game room, arcade, kid camp, new waterpark rides, and an extensive dining and shopping area, so whatever new they bring is sure to wow.

4. Splash Harbor

Splash Harbor is a great water park near Mansfield, and while it may not have as many attractions as the previous entries, sometimes you don’t need them. Splash Harbor is great for a short weekend getaway with a waterpark and arcade. My family and I went here often over the years to shake those winter blues and have some fun.

Splash Harbor is a lot more affordable than the options above, and they also offer day swim passes and specials. Swimming in the waterpark for a couple hours and playing in the arcade for one or two more is enough to tucker any kid out, and they have a great buffet and TV for relaxing afterward. I can verify that it makes a great weekend getaway without overwhelming everyone with too many activities.

Overall, Splash Harbor is the best value waterpark of them all on the list. You still get a decent waterpark and hotel, but at a far better price than the big resorts like Kalahari and the Great Wolf Lodge. They also have a biking/walking trail at the hotel if you go during the warmer months. If you go during the summer, just make sure you pack some sunscreen! They open the roof to the water park in the summer.

5. Comfort Inn & Suites

I know what you’re thinking. This is a hotel, not a waterpark. And indeed, Comfort Inn & Suites is a hotel. But a pool doesn’t need to have a lot of fancy slides or an arcade, it just needs to be relaxing and have a hot tub you can see the kids from.

Kids don’t need much to have fun, and all you really need is a heated pool to get away for a weekend in the winter. You don’t need to go to this hotel in particular, as I’m sure there’s a hotel with an indoor pool closer to you you can get away with. As long as the water’s not freezing and you can sit back and relax, you can have just as much fun at a basic hotel as a fancy resort.

While this is the cheapest option on the list, it might be just what you and your family need. A lovely weekend away where the kids can play with some pool toys, and you can sit back in the pool lounge. This is a good option if you have younger children, as large crowds and wild rides could upset toddlers when all they want to do is splash around in floaties.

I believe every family should consider a weekend trip to a water park to help get rid of cabin fever and let the kids blow off some steam from the long school days. It’s never an easy choice when you’re trying to get outside during winter, but going to an indoor water park can be just the thing to stop thinking about snow and ice. It’s great to swim around, play with your kids, or kick your feet back and relax.

I hope I’ve inspired you to take a look at some of these water parks, or at least consider a weekend getaway for you and your family. Have fun and hang in there during the long winter days! Any of these resorts are great for children or adults, and there’s sure to be something just for you.
